Faculty Online/Hybrid Training

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning offers two trainings for faculty who are seeking certification in teaching online or hybrid courses: Online/Hybrid Course Design and Teaching and Online/Hybrid Facilitator. We also offer a Refresher version of the Designer's course for faculty who have had previous training.

Designer's Course

The Online /Hybrid Course Design and Teaching Training will cover the pedagogy of online and hybrid course design and teaching. This course is appropriate for all faculty who will be:

Designing and teaching an online/hybrid course.
Teaching an online/hybrid course that has already been designed and set up in a Canvas shell, and will be responsible for work such as:
- revision/creation of the syllabus.
- choosing and creating teaching materials and learning activities.
- providing classroom face-to-face (for hybrid courses) and online direct instruction.

Refresher Course

This course provides the same information and the option to engage in the same discussions and activities as the Designer Course. It is available to faculty who have previous Online/Hybrid certification. Faculty in the course can decide how they want to interact with it. Any faculty member who completes a module by reviewing all the material and completing all the activities will receive a digital badge. Earn all the module badges to receive a course completion badge! For anyone who completes the course, we will also note it on the official list of trained faculty.

Facilitator's Course

The Online/Hybrid Course Facilitator training covers best practices in communicating with and providing instruction for students in an online format. It is important to note that this course is significantly different from the previous Facilitator training offered by CETL.

This course might be suitable for you if you are

teaching an online Canvas course that has been fully developed by the department. "Developed" means a complete Canvas course (policies, schedule, modules, assignments, rubrics, lectures, content) that the department created and which you will use without any creative control of your own.
co-teaching a course (with a full-time lead instructor who is responsible for the overall course design)
overseeing onsite clinical or field placements.

Enrollment

Please contact CETL@svsu.edu to discuss placement in the appropriate training course. If you know which course you would like to enroll in, you can use our Faculty Online/Hybrid Training form to sign up.

Format and Prerequisite Knowledge

Both courses are fully online and are asynchronous except for the required consultations with CETL staff.

Faculty will need to know how to use Canvas before starting the training, including how to access feedback left by the course facilitator.

Training Dates

Training will be ongoing rather than in several sessions a year as it was in the past. Faculty can sign up at any time. The only requirements are that the faculty member must have an SVSU email address and a development course in Canvas.

Waivers

In some circumstances, faculty or their chair may request a waiver of the training. These circumstances are

the faculty member has equivalent training from another college or university or extensive experience teaching and designing online courses.
the faculty member is co-teaching an online/hybrid course but will not be responsible for teaching online or designing any part of the online course. The faculty member will only be teaching and designing face-to-face portions of the course or will only be providing clinical or field placement oversight.

If a faculty member or chair would like to request a waiver of the training, they may fill out our Online/Hybrid Course Teaching Certification Waiver form. If the request is a waiver based on prior training and/or experience, evidence of that training and experience will be required.
